As the name suggests, Si Shen Tang is made up of four herbs: Chinese yam, Poria cocos, Euryale ferox, and lotus seeds. Chinese yam: The ancient name is yam, sweet in taste, neutral in nature; it enters the spleen, lung, and kidney meridians. Poria: Sweet, light, neutral in nature; enters the heart, lung, and spleen meridians. It promotes diuresis, strengthens the spleen, calms the mind, and has the effects of promoting urination and eliminating edema. It can also improve phlegm, cough, loose stools, and diarrhea.

Gorgon Fruit: Sweet, astringent, neutral in nature; enters the spleen and kidney meridians. Gorgon Fruit and Lotus Seed are both seeds of the Nymphaeaceae family, and have similar functions, but when there is a symptom of heart fire and dryness in clinical practice, Lotus Seed is used to emphasize nourishing the heart qi, while Gorgon Fruit focuses on its astringent effect, such as treating nocturnal emission, frequent urination, nocturnal emission, spermatorrhea, diarrhea, and leukorrhea.

Lotus seeds: sweet, astringent, neutral in nature; enter the heart, spleen, and kidney meridians. It has the function of tonifying the spleen and clearing the intestines, and is helpful for spleen deficiency, chronic diarrhea, and metrorrhagia and leukorrhea in women. It can nourish the heart and kidneys, and is used for palpitations, insomnia, restlessness, frequent urination, and spermatorrhea.

Generally, the four medicinal ingredients of Si Shen Soup are cooked with pig stomach or pig small intestine, but some people cook them with spare ribs, pig lungs or pig kidneys. All of them are delicious dishes and are said to have their own compatibility or special effects.
