Motherwort has long been recorded in ancient Chinese medical books. The Compendium of Materia Medica also has a detailed description of it, saying that it "treats women's menstrual disorders and various postpartum diseases, all thanks to its blood-activating effect." Plant characteristics

The plant characteristics of motherwort vary at different growth stages. Fresh motherwort has no stems in the seedling stage, and the basal leaves are rounded with 5 to 9 shallow fissures on the edges, and each lobe has 2 to 3 blunt teeth. In the early flowering stage, the stem is square columnar, with many branches on the upper part, about 30 to 60 cm long, 0.2 to 0.5 cm in diameter, green on the surface, tender in texture, and with pith in the middle of the cross section. The leaves are alternately arranged, petioled, green in color, tender in texture, and juicy when rubbed. The lower stem leaves are palmately 3-lobed, and the upper leaves are deeply or shallowly pinnately lobed into 3 pieces, with the entire lobe or with a few saw teeth. The smell is faint and the taste is slightly bitter.

The surface of the stem of dried motherwort is gray-green or yellow-green, light, tough, and has pith in the middle of the cross section. The leaves are gray-green, often wrinkled, broken, and easy to fall off. The inflorescence is axillary, the small flowers are lavender, the calyx is tubular, and the corolla is two-lipped. The cut segment is about 2 cm long.

Differences between different varieties

There are many species of motherwort, which are mainly distinguished based on their growth environment and morphological characteristics. Common species include:

  1. Wild Motherwort : grows on hillsides, roadsides, fields, etc., with smaller plants and finer leaves.

  2. Cultivated Motherwort : Artificially cultivated, the plants are larger, the leaves are wider, and the yield is higher.

  3. White Motherwort : The flowers are white, and other characteristics are similar to those of common Motherwort.

  4. Purple Motherwort : The flowers are purple, and other characteristics are similar to common motherwort.

There is no significant difference in the medicinal value of different species of motherwort, but the quality of cultivated motherwort is relatively stable because the growth environment is controllable.
